How to Give App Feedback Developers Actually Use

A simple format for tester feedback that developers can act on: what you did, what happened, what you expected, plus examples of good vs useless feedback.

Updated 5 min readBy the TestersZone team

Every TestersZone check-in asks for a rating and at least 20 characters of feedback. Twenty characters is the floor, not the goal. The testers developers love write feedback they can act on in under a minute. Here's how.

The 3-part formula

  1. What I did: the steps, briefly.
  2. What happened: the actual result, including exact error text if there was one.
  3. What I expected: what you thought would happen instead.

Add your device and Android version in the Device field. Many bugs only appear on certain phones.

Bad vs good examples

UselessUseful
"Nice app ๐Ÿ‘""Added 3 habits and checked one off. The streak counter stayed at 0 until I reopened the app. Expected it to update right away."
"It crashed""Rotated to landscape on the Settings screen โ†’ app closed. Happens every time. Pixel 7, Android 15."
"Confusing""On sign-up I didn't know if the code was sent by SMS or email. A line saying where to look would help."

Ideas for daily check-ins

Testing the same app for 14 days? Give each day a small focus so your feedback stays fresh:

  • Day 1: first impressions and onboarding.
  • Days 2-4: the developer's testing instructions, one task per day.
  • Days 5-8: edge cases: no internet, rotate the screen, switch apps mid-task, dark mode.
  • Days 9-13: things you'd use daily. What's slow or annoying after repeat use?
  • Day 14: a summary: would you keep this app, and what one change would make it better?

Tone: honest and kind

Developers on TestersZone are testing your apps too. Be direct about problems, mention what works, and keep it about the app, not the person. Copy-pasted or empty check-ins are easy to spot, and developers can remove testers who fake check-ins (see our community guidelines and how verification works). Developers who want more engagement from testers can read keeping testers engaged for 14 days.

How we keep this accurate
