How to Add Closed Testers With an Email List

Create an email list in Play Console, attach it to your closed track, share the opt-in link, and avoid the mistakes that leave testers uncounted.

Short answer

In Play Console open your closed track, go to Testers, choose Email lists, create a list and paste testers’ Google account emails (comma-separated or CSV). Save, tick the list for the track, then copy the opt-in link and send it. Testers only count after they open the link and tap Become a tester.

Before you start

  • Your app setup and App content are complete, and a release is ready for the closed track.
  • You have each tester’s Google account email: the one their Play Store uses. See do testers need a Gmail account.

Step by step

  1. In Play Console select your app and open Test and release → Testing → Closed testing (menu names change slightly over time).
  2. Pick your closed track and open the Testers tab.
  3. Under Email lists, choose Create email list.
  4. Name it (for example “Closed test, Oct 2026”) and add emails, separated by commas or uploaded as a CSV.
  5. Save, then make sure the list is ticked for this track.
  6. Add a feedback URL or email so testers know how to reach you.
  7. Save changes, and publish the release if you haven’t.
  8. Copy the opt-in link (it appears once the release is published) and send it to testers.

Limits from Google

Google’s help says you can create up to 200 lists with up to 2,000 users each, and up to 50 lists per track. That’s plenty for any closed test.

Message template for testers

Thanks for testing! 1) Open this link signed in with the Google account on your phone’s Play Store: [opt-in link]. 2) Tap “Become a tester”. 3) Tap the link to download from Google Play and install. Please stay opted in for 14 days and use the app for a few minutes on most days. Reply here with anything odd.

Email list or Google Group?

Email lists are best when you know every tester up front. A Google Group is easier when people join over time or you want to reuse testers across apps. See use a Google Group for testers.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Creating the list but not ticking it on the track.
  • Typos in emails. A wrong address silently never matches.
  • Sending the Play Store link instead of the opt-in link. See why testers can’t find your app.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the same email list for several apps?

Yes. Email lists live at the developer account level, so you can tick the same list on closed tracks for different apps. Each app still needs testers to opt in through its own link.

Do testers get an email from Google when I add them?

Don’t count on it. Adding an address to a list doesn’t reliably notify the person, so always send the opt-in link yourself.

How do I remove a tester?

Edit the list and delete their address. Remember that removing someone ends their continuous opt-in for the 14-day requirement.
