How to Choose Countries for Your Testing Tracks
Country availability decides which testers can install your closed test. How country settings work across tracks and a sensible default.
Short answer
For a closed test, the simple default is to make the track available in every country your testers are in, often all countries. Google’s help says country changes apply across tracks, and testers in unselected countries can’t install. Internal testing is the exception: internal testers get access anywhere.
How it works
You set countries and regions for your releases in Play Console. Google notes that changes to distributed countries apply across all tracks, and that internal testers can access your app even in countries where it isn’t available. For closed and open tracks, a tester’s Play country must be one you’ve selected.
Sensible defaults
| Situation | Countries for the closed test |
|---|---|
| Testers from a global exchange or online community | All countries |
| Region-specific app (local transit, local payments) | Your target region, recruit testers there |
| Legal limits on where you can operate | Only the countries you’re allowed in |
| You plan a soft launch later | Test broadly now, restrict production at launch |
Things that are restricted anyway
Some countries have extra requirements or restrictions for certain app categories (real-money gaming, financial services, health). If your app is in one of those categories, check Google’s policies and local rules before enabling a country.
Paid apps
If your app is paid, testers may need to buy it, and paid-app availability depends on Google’s merchant support for each country. Many developers keep the app free during testing and use in-app purchases with license testers instead.
Troubleshooting
A tester sees “not available in your country” → their Play country isn’t selected. Add it, wait a few hours, and ask them to try again. More in testers in different countries and 7 opt-in fixes.
How it affects your application
The questionnaire asks how your testers compare to your expected audience. Note where testers were based and what that taught you. Honest context (“international testers, launching first in the UK”) is fine.
Frequently asked questions
Does country availability affect search ranking?
Your app only appears in search in countries where it’s available. That doesn’t matter for a closed test, which isn’t searchable anyway.
Can I exclude one country?
Yes. Select all countries and untick the ones you need to exclude.
How long until a country change takes effect?
It can take a few hours to reach every tester.
