Android Developer Verification in 2026: What Play Developers Need to Know
Google’s Android developer verification starts September 30, 2026 in four countries. What it means for apps on Google Play, sideloaded apps, and new developers.
Short answer
If you publish only on Google Play, you’re mostly covered already: Google says Play automatically registers 99% of apps. The change mainly affects apps distributed outside Play. From September 30, 2026, protections begin for installs on certified devices in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand, with global rollout in 2027.
What’s changing
Google is requiring that apps installed on certified Android devices come from verified developers. According to Google’s developer verification page:
| Date | What happens |
|---|---|
| August 2026 | Developer APIs, limited distribution accounts and a “power user” advanced flow launch |
| September 30, 2026 | Protections begin in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand on certified devices running Android 7+ |
| 2027 and beyond | Verification expands globally for all apps on certified devices |
If you publish on Google Play
Your Play Console identity verification already covers most of this. Google says Play automatically registers 99% of apps, and you use Play Console to manually register any remaining apps or ones you also distribute outside Play.
Nothing about this replaces the 12-tester closed test for new personal accounts. Both apply.
If you distribute outside Play
APK downloads from your site, alternative stores, or direct sharing: Google points these developers to the Android Developer Console to verify. Hobbyists and students sharing with a few devices can use a limited distribution account. See Play Console vs Android Developer Console.
What to do now
- Make sure your Play Console identity verification is complete.
- In Play Console, check whether any of your apps need manual registration.
- If you also ship APKs outside Play, register those apps.
- Recheck Google’s page periodically. Dates and regions can expand.
This is a fast-moving policy. We’ll update this page as Google publishes changes, and the date at the top shows when we last checked.
