Do Closed Testers Need a Gmail Account?

Closed testers need a Google account, not necessarily a Gmail address. How work and school accounts behave, and which email to put on your tester list.

Short answer

They need a Google account signed in to the Play Store on an Android device. Most people use Gmail, but any Google account works, including one created with a non-Gmail address. The email on your tester list must be the same account they use in the Play Store, or they won’t count.

Google account vs Gmail address

A Google account can be created with any email address, so “name@outlook.com” can be a Google account too. What matters for closed testing:

  1. The address on your email list (or the account in your Google Group) is a Google account.
  2. The tester opts in while signed in with that account.
  3. The Play Store on their phone uses that account to install.

The most common mismatch

Testers give you their usual email (say a work address), but their phone’s Play Store uses a personal Gmail. They opt in on the web with one, install with the other, and nothing lines up. Ask testers for the email shown in the Play Store app (tap the profile picture in Play to see it).

Work and school accounts

Google Workspace accounts (company or school) can be managed by an administrator who restricts Play Store access or app installs. If a tester’s work account can’t opt in or install, have them use a personal Google account instead.

Google Groups make this easier

With a Google Group, testers join the group with whatever Google account they want, then opt in with the same account. You don’t have to collect and type emails. See use a Google Group for testers.

Checklist to send testers

  • Use the Google account that is signed in to your Play Store.
  • Open the opt-in link in a browser signed in to that same account.
  • Tap Become a tester, then install from the link on that page.

Frequently asked questions

Can a tester use two Google accounts on one phone?

Yes, but they must opt in and install with the same account. Ask them to pick one and stick with it for the whole test.

What if a tester’s email isn’t a Google account?

They can create a Google account with that address, or use a Gmail address instead. Add whichever account they actually use in the Play Store.
