Closed Testing for Wear OS Apps: Finding Testers With Watches

Wear OS apps need testers who own a watch. How the 12-tester rule applies, the Wear OS target API, form factor setup, and where to recruit.

Updated 3 min readBy the TestersZone team

Short answer

The same 12-tester, 14-day rule applies, but your testers need a Wear OS watch to really use the app. Set up the Wear OS form factor in Play Console, target API 35 or higher (the Wear OS requirement since August 31, 2026), and recruit from smartwatch communities, because most Android users don’t own one.

What’s different for Wear OS

Target API figures are from Google’s target SDK page.

Setting up the form factor

In Play Console, open Test and release → Advanced settings → Form factors (wording varies) and add Wear OS. Upload Wear OS screenshots and opt in to Wear OS distribution. Google reviews Wear OS apps against its Wear quality guidelines, so read those before submitting.

Standalone or not?

Declare in your manifest whether the watch app works on its own or needs a phone app. If it needs a phone companion, testers have to install both. Your instructions should say so clearly.

Finding testers who own watches

This is the hardest part. Most people you know won’t have a Wear OS watch.

  • Smartwatch communities and subreddits.
  • Wear OS developer Discords. Fellow developers will test yours if you test theirs.
  • Tester exchanges where testers list their devices. On TestersZone, ask for watch owners in your testing instructions.

Recruit more than you need (15-20). Watch owners are scarce, so losing a few hurts more.

Tasks for watch testers

  1. Install from the watch’s Play Store (or via the phone).
  2. Use the tile or complication for a day.
  3. Check battery drain over a full day.
  4. Try it with the phone disconnected (if standalone).

For watch faces, ask testers to wear it for a full day and report readability and battery impact.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Wear OS app be tested on an emulator?

Android Studio has Wear OS emulators for development. For the closed test, real watch owners give far better evidence and catch battery and sensor issues.

Do watch-face testers need to do anything special?

They select your watch face on their watch after installing. Ask them to wear it for a day and report readability and battery impact.

Does a Wear OS app need its own closed test?

If it’s a separate app with its own package name, yes. If it ships as part of your phone app’s listing, they share one test.
