Can You Add Testers After Your Closed Test Has Started?

Yes, you can add closed testers at any time. Each new tester has their own 14 days, so late joiners only count once their own 14 days are complete.

Short answer

Yes, any time. Add their email to the list (or let them join your Google Group) and send the opt-in link. But each tester’s 14 days start when they opt in, so someone who joins on day 10 doesn’t help you apply on day 14. They count once their own 14 days are complete.

How the count works with late joiners

Google requires at least 12 testers who have been opted in continuously for at least 14 days. In practice, on any given day, count how many testers have been opted in for 14 days or more. That number has to reach 12.

Example: 10 testers joined on day 1, and you added 4 more on day 6.

DayTesters with 14+ daysCan apply?
1410No
1914Yes

The late joiners pushed your apply date from day 14 to day 19. That’s still better than never reaching 12, which is why adding testers is always worth it.

How to add testers to a running test

  • Email list: Play Console → your closed track → Testers → edit the list → add emails → save. Then send them the opt-in link. See add testers with an email list.
  • Google Group: just add the person to the group. They still have to open the opt-in link and tap Become a tester. See use a Google Group.

Adding testers doesn’t restart anyone else’s days and doesn’t need a new release.

Avoid the “exactly 12” trap

If you start with exactly 12 and one opts out on day 11, you’ll be adding replacements under pressure, and they need their own full 14 days. Start with 15-20 so a few drop-outs don’t move your date. The 12 testers guide has the buffer math, and the calculator shows your new earliest date.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a maximum number of closed testers?

Not a practical one. Google allows email lists of up to 2,000 users each and Google Groups with no size limit.

Should I add testers in batches?

It’s better to get most testers in on day 1 so their 14 days line up. Add replacements later only as needed.
