What works for screenshots
- Lead with the outcome, not the login screen. Screenshot 1 should show the app doing its main job.
- One message per screenshot, with a short caption: “Check off habits from your home screen.”
- Real UI, not mock-ups of features that don’t exist. Misleading screenshots break metadata policy.
- Portrait phone screenshots at 1080 × 1920 (9:16) are a safe default.
The icon
- Simple shape, readable at small sizes, no text where possible.
- Don’t copy another brand’s style or logo.
- Google Play applies its own shape mask, so keep important detail inside the centre.
Use your closed test to improve them
Ask testers which screenshot made them understand the app and which confused them. Swap before production. It’s cheap and you have a captive audience.

Frequently asked questions
Can screenshots include device frames?
Yes, as long as they show your real app clearly and follow the size rules.
Do I need tablet screenshots?
You need at least two screenshots to publish. Adding tablet and large-screen screenshots helps your app appear well on those devices.
Is a preview video worth it?
Google calls it highly recommended for games. For apps, a short clear video can help, but strong screenshots matter more.
